Backyard Pond and Waterfalls: A Therapeutic Approach

9/10/2018

There are many benefits of water features that far outweigh the beautiful aesthetic approach. From increased family time, to health and wellness and environmental conservation, it is pretty safe to say that water features are for EVERY body..even if you just don't know it yet.

Did you know?

Picture
....that water features have been proven to provide soothing sights and sounds that help you relax and de-stress in today's busy world? It's true! In the Standards and Guidelines Preliminary Report of 2007, the Sustainability Sites Initiative reports that water features lower your blood pressure and improve your physical and mental health as you prop your feet up and enjoy the therapeutic effects of Mother Nature. In fact, hospital patients who have a view of natural landscapes recover faster from surgery and require less pain medication. In addition, heart rate, blood preassure, and other measures return to normal levels more quickly when people view natural rather than urban landscapes after a stressful experience.

Local Examples:

It is becoming more common to see medical care facilities, senior care homes, and churches marketing their water feature as highlights to their facilities for the reason of therapeutic approach to care and relaxation. We've even been contracted to install them at local public schools so that the students have a place to decompress before and after school. To see an example of a water feature we installed at the Sechlar Family Cancer Center, click here to read our blog on that project! Similarly, check out the Fountain Installation project we installed at the Northern Lebanon Middle School a few years ago. The Prayer Garden at Lebanon Area Evangelical Free Church serves symbolic purpose as it greets all of the worshipers and attendees to the church. Lastly, we installed a beautiful pond with a waterfall at the Retirement Community at ECC Stoneridge at Poplar Run in Myerstown, PA so that the folks can sit and enjoy the beauty that comes from pond fish and rushing waters. Check out the Stoneridge Water Feature by clicking here!

So Now What?

Dreamscapes also carries a full line of pond supplies from water treatments and fish medications to pond pumps, heaters, fountains, plants and fish! Tadpoles and snails are also available at our Aquatic Retail Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania seasonally while supplies last from May-August.  If you think you need it, we have it!

Fountain Installation Project for Northern Lebanon Middle School

"The reflection garden is a peaceful place where staff and students can go to think, reflect and converse with one another. Thanks again for this awesome water feature project at NL." -Erik Bentzel PhD

This past summer, Dreamscapes had the fun honor of creating an amazing fountain-waterfeature project for the reflection garden at Northern Lebanon Middle School in Fredericksburg, PA. Part of the goal for this project was to make creative use of a dark dead zone that existed under an overhang at the main entrance of the school.

Let us know if you think we did a good job of doing just that. ;)

Picture
Featuring 5 stacked slate urns, 6 spillway bowl and 3 bubbling moss rocks all operating with 3 powerful Aquasurge pumps by Aquascape, Inc... it was pretty obvious the type of attention this waterfeature would bring to this particular corner, which. conveniently sits right outside the window of the principal's office. Because of which, we installed some bamboo fencing to act as not only a real attractive backdrop for the waterfeature, but to also give the principal some privacy.

Unique Seating Areas

Given some inspiration, one Northern Lebanon Middle School staff member found a photo on Pinterest of stone seating made with railroad ties and gravel. Paired with a traditional style paver patio, the unique outdoor seats give a physical place for students and faculty to spend time before, during and after school. They've even seen an increase of families enjoying the waterfeature, as well.

So Now What???

Pool Waterfall Installation Project in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania: Part 1

10/16/2017

Cue the ultimate backyard pool make-over: complete with a concrete-tree rope-swing, sliding board, waterfall and diving rocks. What? YES! Dreamscapes is SO thrilled to have an opportunity to be apart of this Mechanicsburg  project with Aquavisions, Inc. Because Dreamscapes Watergardens specializes in all things waterfeature related, meaning the waterfall portion of this really awesome backyard project, this homeowner allowed us to have full creative control when it came to the pool waterfall. The only request? It MUST have diving rocks 3'-4' high.

DEAL!

Project Specifications

Picture

The sheer volume of the waterfall for this project is amazing in and of itself--  25'x22' and about 9' tall, showcasing 40 tons of rock, some half of the size of a volkswagen (picture that). To lift these heavy pieces, we even had to rent a full size excavator instead of using our own mini!

The waterfeature project took about a week and a half with a 3 man crew and involved some really awesome veining that will be pictured in a Part 2 blog. The rest of this pool project will be finished by Aquavisions within the next few months-- we can't wait to get some finished photos/videos with running water and that gushing awesome waterfall sound to put in our Part 2 blog being posted in early 2018.

Pool Waterfall Installation Process

Picture

"Pool Waterfalls" are a whole different ballgame when it comes to our typical waterfeature installation because they don't contain the regular filtration components of waterfeatures/watergardens that contain pond fish or aquatic plants. Generally, for example, we use and promote the Aquascape Filtration System because the ease of use and maintenance. The filtration system used for the pool waterfall, however, is the same filtration system used to keep the waterfall's water quality ideal.

So what is the regular/seasonal waterfeature maintenance on something like this?

Pool Waterfall Maintenance

Picture
In a pool waterfall, the "pool portion" of the pool becomes the waterfall's reservoir and therefore the regular pool chemicals circulate through the water that trickles down the the rocks of the waterfall. This type of set up makes the maintenance on this style waterfeature very minimal because the pool chemicals help to maintain the waterfall's water quality. Algae does not grow if the right amount of chlorine is present in the water. These same chemicals, however, also make typical waterfeature aquatic plants unusable because chlorine KILLS plants!

Fall maintenance on a pool waterfall falls in line with the shutdown of the pool--- once the water is drained out of the pool and the pump is pulled, all is taken care of. A net can be installed over the waterfall to make spring leaf clean-up easier. Regular waterfeature maintenance may be a lot more involved when fish are present---if you're wondering about what typical maintenance is, jump over to our Fall/Winter Life Support blog.

So What Now??

Once this total project is complete and the pool can be filled with water, we will post a Part 2 blog with videos and photos. Located in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Dreamscapes Watergardens installs koi fish ponds and pondless waterfalls (disappearing waterfalls) all over the Central Pennsylvania area. For more information on koi ponds, waterfalls, POOL WATERFALLS or fountain waterfeature installations, please contact us directly!
